most influential and prolific woodblock print artist of
Meiji Japan. This book presents his last masterpiece , the
popular "Shinkei sanjurokkaisen, New forms of thirty-six
gohst".
The series New forms of thirty-six gohst woodblock prints,
started in 1889, was completed just
before the artist's death in 1892, the last three prints were
published after his death.
This full color folio-sized book illustrate the 36
woodblock prints from a set of gorgeous first impressions,
all reproduced in full colors and near actual size.Opposite to
each plate appears a story on which the design is based.
An introduction by Donald Richie probes the nature of
Japanese ghosts and contrast them with their Western
counterparts.
An essay on Yoshitoshi and his times explores the Japanese
tradition of ghosts stories.
John Stevenson is a specialist on Yoshitoshi. He is
the author of 100 ASPECTS OF THE MOON (San Francisco
Graphic Society 1992 , Hotei 2001)
